When AI calls you for a customer: how to answer booking calls from AI assistants

When AI calls you for a customer: how to answer booking calls from AI assistants

When an AI assistant rings your business for a customer, answer it the way you'd answer a new customer: confirm the service, give a clear price range and your next available time, and offer a simple next step. The assistant is gathering answers to pass back to a real person who is comparing a few businesses. A vague answer, or a hang-up, can leave you out of that comparison.

This field guide walks your front desk through one of these calls, moment by moment, with lines they can say word for word.

AI assistants are now ringing service businesses for their customers

Google Search has a feature called "Have AI check pricing". In Google's own words, "Google can contact businesses on your behalf to check for availability and prices", and after the customer fills in a short form, "Google will call multiple service providers near you." The customer then gets "an email from Google with quotes from various service providers."

Google's help page lists services such as auto repair, hair salons, pet groomers, wellness centres and driving schools, and says it is "working on quickly expanding our coverage to more services." It also says Google "will share your request details, which may include your name, with these businesses."

JobNimbus, a US contractor software company, reported in May 2026 that Google announced at Google I/O that the feature, also called "Ask for Me", would expand to home repair across the US this summer.

For US businesses, these calls may already be reaching your front desk. For Australian businesses, Google's help page says the feature is available "in English to signed-in users over 18 in the US", so it isn't listed for Australia today. Getting your answer lines ready now means your team isn't caught off guard if that changes.

The first ten seconds: don't hang up

A call that sounds automated is easy to treat as a robocall. Before you hang up, listen for the reason for the call. If the caller asks about a service, a price or a time, there's a real customer behind it.

Lines your team can use:

"Thanks for calling, you've reached [Business]. Are you calling about a booking for a customer?"

"Happy to help. What service are they after, and when do they need it?"

If the caller is selling something rather than asking about a service, end the call politely as you would with any sales call.

What it will ask, and the answer lines that get you picked

Google's help page says these calls check "availability and prices". Expect three questions: do you do this service, what does it cost, and when can you do it. Answer each one plainly, in one or two sentences, so the answer is easy to pass on.

Do you offer the service?

"Yes, we do [service] for [type of customer or area]."

What does it cost?

"Most [service] jobs are between [low] and [high], depending on [the main factor]. We confirm the exact price after [inspection or quote]."

Give the same range you'd give a person who rang. "You'll have to call back" or "it depends" with no range gives the customer nothing to compare.

When can you do it?

"Our next opening is [day and time]. We also have [second option]."

What happens next?

"If they'd like that time, they can call us on [number] or book at [web address], and we'll lock it in."

What never to tell an AI caller, and what to say instead

Treat an AI caller like any caller you haven't met. Share what you'd put on your website. Don't share anything you'd only tell a known client.

Don't give out account details, staff members' personal numbers or schedules, other clients' names or addresses, or internal notes.

"I can't share that over the phone, but I'm happy to give you our general pricing and availability."

If the caller says it's calling for one of your existing clients and asks about their account, ask the client to call you directly.

"For anything about an existing booking, we'll need to speak with [client name] directly. They can call us on [number]."

This is practical guidance for your front desk, not legal advice.

When the real customer calls or texts back: turning the enquiry into a booking

The AI's call is the start, not the booking. The customer reads the comparison and then contacts the business they like. That call or text is where the revenue is won or lost.

"Thanks for getting back to us. You were after [service] around [time]. I can still do [day and time]. Shall I book that in?"

Make sure someone answers that call. Missing the follow-up after doing well on the first call is the most expensive mistake in this whole process. AutoCall's approach is that your people answer in business hours and AI covers overflow and after hours, with a warm handoff to your team when needed.

Questions owners ask about AI callers

Is it really Google calling my business?

Google's help page says that when a customer uses "Have AI check pricing", "Google will call multiple service providers near you" to check availability and prices. Treat the call like any customer enquiry, and don't share private details.

Should I give an AI caller our prices?

Give the same price ranges and availability you'd give a person who rang. Never give account details, staff details or other clients' information.

Is Google's AI calling businesses in Australia?

Google's help page says the feature is available in English to signed-in users over 18 in the US. It isn't listed for Australia today, but it's worth having your answer lines ready.

What should I say when an AI calls my business to book?

Confirm the service, give a clear price range and your next available time, and tell the caller how the customer can book.

Talk through your booking calls on a 30-minute call

On a 30-minute call we'll look at how your booking calls are answered today, in business hours and after hours, and where enquiries slip away before they turn into bookings.

One client result, and not an AI-caller figure: A client in Western Australia used AutoCall's AI for less than 5 minutes every other day and booked over 35 appointments in one calendar month.
